Sheriff’s office warns residents of telephone warrant scam

Editor’s note: the following information has been released by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Over the past week, we have had at least 4 scams in which a subject calls the victim, identifying himself as a Jefferson County Lieutenant. The suspect advises that there is an arrest warrant out for the victim, and instructions are given to come to the Sheriff’s Office with cash cards. The cash card numbers are taken over the phone, and the victims have responded here for what they are told is either a DNA collection or processing.

The victims waited here sometimes for several hours before realizing that they had been scammed. The number that the scam originates from is a legitimate sounding number, and has an official sounding voice mailbox set up.

If anyone has any questions in reference to information received from JESO (Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office), they are always welcome to call to verify that information.

Bond is taken directly, not via cash cards, iTunes cards, or any other suspicious sounding methods.

Never give out any personal information over the phone if you are not certain of the person on the other end. The Sheriff’s Office will never call anyone to tell them they have a warrant.
