Fort high school ‘Swing Dance’ to be held Saturday at Fort Atkinson Club

The School District of Fort Atkinson Performing Arts Department and the Fort Atkinson Club have announced they will be hosting a “Swing Dance,” Saturday, Dec. 4. 

The event is designed to offer participants a chance to learn how to swing dance, afterwhich they will be treated to a performance given by the Fort Atkinson High School Jazz Band. 

According to information released by the organizers, an instructor from the Arthur Murray Madison dance studio will be at the Fort Atkinson Club, 211 S. Water St. E, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. and will teach dance techniques, beginning with basic swing and moving to more complex swing dance styles. 

Those interested in participating in dance lessons are encouraged to arrive early as the group lesson will begin promptly at 7. The doors to the Fort Atkinson Club will open at 6:45, according to the release. 

Additionally, those interested in dance lessons are encouraged to wear closed-toe dress or tennis shoes. 

All program participants are encouraged to wear swing dance attire, which, organizers noted, consists of black clothing with red accents.  

The jazz band is sceduled to play between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Seating will be available for those interested in listenting to the band as well as areas for dancing. Due to COVID safety precautions, the room has a limit of 75 patrons and masks are required when patrons are not eating or drinking.  

The band will play such selections as Glenn Miller’s classics “Moonlight Serenade” and “American Patrol,” and Count Basie tunes such as “Leap Frog” and “Lil’ Darlin,” according to the release. 

Refreshments will be provided at the event without additional charge, although donations are kindly accepted. 

A cost for the full event is $10 per guest payable at the door. 

Proceeds from the event will be used to support the high school jazz band as it travels to various jazz festivals as well as cover costs for the venue and dance instructor. 

The event is open to partons of all ages.
