Eight members of the School District of Fort Atkinson’s Safety Patrol program, two from each of the district’s four elementary schools, have been chosen as February’s Safety Patrollers of the Month, according to Purdy Elementary School Principal Leigh Ann Scheuerell.
The students, all of whom are in fifth grade, were selected by their teachers for outstanding duty to their assigned posts where they served for a month as crossing guards.
The safety patrollers help their fellow students get across the streets near their respective elementary schools safely before and after school, Scheuerell said.
As part of the recognition, lunch was provided for the students courtesy of McDonalds in Fort Atkinson, Scheuerell added.
Safety patrol students selected for this recognition usually meet in-person where they can enjoy their lunch while getting to know other fifth-graders with whom they will be joining in middle school next year, Scheuerell said.
As a pandemic precaution, she said, this year, the students shared their lunch and became acquainted with one another using the Zoom platform.
Students in the program undergo safety patrol training given by school liaison officer Dan Hefty, Scheuerell noted.
