Humorist, paranormal investigators, Mexican historian Zoom presentations offered

Humorist Michael Perry, paranormal investigators and Mexicans in Wisconsin are the topic of three Zoom programs being presented this month by the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library in Whitewater. 

 “An Evening with Michael Perry” will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10.

Michael Perry is a New York Times bestselling author, humorist, playwright, and radio show host from New Auburn, Wis.

Perry’s bestselling memoirs include “Population: 485,” recently adapted for the stage; “Truck: A Love Story”; “Coop”; “Visiting Tom”; “Million Billion”; and “Peaceful Persistence.” Among his other dozen titles are “The Scavengers” (for young readers) and his novel, “The Jesus Cow.”

Raised on a small Midwestern dairy farm, Perry put himself through nursing school while working on a ranch in Wyoming, then detoured into writing. He lives with his wife and two daughters in rural Wisconsin, where he serves on the local volunteer fire and rescue service and has a few chickens. 

He hosts the nationally-syndicated “Tent Show Radio,” performs widely as a humorist, and tours with his band, the Long Beds. 

His three live humor albums include “Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow,” “I Got it From the Cows” and “The Clodhopper Monologues.” He can be found online at www.sneezingcow.com.

“Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee” will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 16.

Believe in ghosts or spirits? Skeptical about the paranormal? People of all viewpoints are inited to an informational session about hauntings by the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee (PIM). 

Founded in 2007, the group has investigated many locations in the area, including the Milwaukee Public Museum, Riverside Theater and several area residences. 

The group will be on hand to discuss types of hauntings, the ways they as a team investigate claims of the paranormal and how to be an investigator. Evidence will also be showcased from prior PIM investigations. 

“Mexicans in Wisconsin” is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 23.

Trace the diverse journeys of Mexicans to the Badger State with historian Sergio M. González, author of “Mexicans in Wisconsin” (Wisconsin Historical Society Press). 

González will follow the emigration trails that led Mexicans to settle in Wisconsin over the last century and share how they’ve come to build homes and community in rural and urban spaces across the state.

Sergio M. González is an assistant professor of Latinx Studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee. A historian of 20th-century U.S. immigration, labor, and religion, his scholarship focuses on the development of Latinx communities in the Midwest.
