AAUW annual book sale to be held Friday, Saturday

The Fort Atkinson branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has announced that its annual book sale will be held this weekend at the Fort Atkinson Municipal Building, 30 N. Water St. W., Fort Atkinson.

The event will be held in the building’s Parks and Recreation gym, Friday, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Saturday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to information released by the organization.

The sale is in its 44th year, the release notes.

This weekend, visitors to the sale will find more than 12,000 books that have been donated for sale.

“There is over three months of work in gathering, sorting, boxing, and transporting that many books, and executing a sale of this size. It is definitely a group effort, and a great benefit to the community. Fort Atkinson is a reading community, with diverse reading tastes, and that is clear by the books that are donated year after year,” Kathy Marr, an AAUW Fort Atkinson book sale co-chairperson, was quoted as saying in the release.

As stated in the release, books are categorized into 30 genres, including: fiction, mystery, non-fiction, history, cookbooks, holiday, health, classics, collectible, religion, biographies, reference, and useful arts, among others.

There also is a selection of children’s books, including titles developed for readers as young as toddlers, to those of high school-age.

“Animals” and “women studies” are new among offered categories this year, the release noted.

According to the release, the purpose of the sale is to raise funds to supplement AAUW’s scholarship funds. Educational accessibility to local women is a cornerstone of AAUW’s mission, and this community-supported book sale has assisted over the years the Fort Atkinson branch of AAUW in supplying over $400,000 in scholarships to local women.
