Black Hawk Artists announce 49th annual show

A group of women artists, known as the Black Hawk Artists, has announced the opening of its 49th annual art show.

This year, the event will be held at the Hoard Historical Museum, 401 Whitewater Ave., Fort Atkinson.

The show will begin with an opening reception, Sunday, Nov. 6, from 1 to 4 p.m, with artwork remaining available for viewing through Nov. 17, during the museum’s regular hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

During the opening reception, the Fort Atkinson High School Chamber Orchestra will provide music, according to a news release.

As noted in the release, “For nearly half a century a group of local women artists has met once a month to plan (its) annual art show.”

Included within works on display are those from 13 of the group’s members, with each offering individual interpretations of this year’s theme: “Out on a Limb,” showcased within a hallway leading into the show, the release stated.

Additionally, “hundreds of cards,” including those handmade and some that are prints of original works, will frame the entryway into the Hoard Museum’s Jones Family Gallery. Within the gallery, event-goers will find more than 100 pieces of art produced by the artists over the past year, the release noted.

According to the release, within past decades, the group’s artists often produced works in watercolors. More recently, the show features works of more diverse mediums, including those of ceramics, fiber, paintings, jewelry and sculptures. Paintings and 2D works represent a range of mediums, including acrylic, ink, oil and pastels.

Over the years, artists have evolved in their disciplines, with each offering new pieces representing newly developed techniques and interests.

Artists within the group whose work will be on display include: Jan Gilkey, Priscilla Heussner, Judith Henning, Jan Holewinski, Julia Ince, Sally Koehler, Mary Pratt, and Angela Hamele Szabo, all of whom are from Fort Atkinson; Janet Nelson and Mary Wallace, both of Cambridge; Karen Gomez, Jefferson; Karen Crosby, Lake Mills, and Linda Tump, Whitewater.

Many works on display also will be offered for purchase, according to the release.
