Fort Atkinson city officials have announced that a snow emergency will remain in effect until Thursday at 8 a.m.
During a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from public streets and alleys, according to the city’s announcement.
Residents may park in municipal lots with the exclusion of the lot directly behind the Fort Atkinson Municipal Building. Parking lot signs are posted within lots where residents can find specific rules about parking during snow events, the announcement stated.
According to the announcement, Department of Public Works crews have been monitoring the weather. An event, forecasted by the National Weather Service, is anticipated to bring a heavy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.
In response, city crews will pretreat bridges and main roadways at the start of the snowfall with a brine mix to assist motorists with safer travel.
Plowing and salting operations will take place as the situation merits, the announcement noted.
In addition, city staff will work throughout the day to keep main and secondary roads open, but during the event, travelers should be prepared to encounter slippery spots, especially as they approach intersections, until the storm passes, the announcement advised.
Public works equipment, such as trucks, will be on the roads as the snow accumulates, which is anticipated to begin Wednesday mid-morning.
The department’s staff will take a break from snow and weather management Wednesday evening before returning, as the snowfall ends, to their tasks Thursday in the early morning hours.
Snow removal from the downtown area is expected to take place Friday overnight.
“Please be attentive if you need to be in the area at this time,” the announcement stated.
Further, the announcement reported, should freezing rain persist beyond what is anticipated, crews will adjust their plans to address the situation. Temperatures are expected to remain within a range that will allow for salting operations to be effective, the announcement noted.
During inclement weather, the city will provide updates via its website, social media and local media outlets.
