Doris (Buchanan) Perkin

Doris (Buchanan) Perkin was born in Ft Atkinson, WI on Aug 10, 1923, to the late Robert G and Amy (Armit) Buchanan.  Doris graduated in 1941 from Ft Atkinson High School.  Following graduation, she worked at National Lock in Rockford, IL.  She then attended nursing school at Mt Sinai Hospital in Chicago, IL through the Cadet Nurse Corps, graduating in 1947.  It was at Mt Sinai where Doris met her future husband, Charles E Perkin Sr (Chuck).  They were married on May 4, 1948 in River Forest, IL.  Doris worked at St Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ for 2 years before returning to Ft Atkinson, where she worked as the industrial nurse at the Creamery Package Co and moved on to Ft Memorial Hospital for 28 years, holding many positions.  Doris finished her nursing carrier performing exams for life insurance companies until retiring in 1990.

Doris enjoyed music and spent several years singing with the Janesville Sweet Adelines.  Doris and husband Chuck enjoyed golf and were active members of the Koshkonong Mounds Country club. They also enjoyed traveling and spent many winters as snowbirds in Florida.   

Doris was on the Food Pantry Board for 25 years.  She spent many years volunteering for both the Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. She was the assistant treasurer at the former Shalom Presbyterian Church for 16 years, on the Session board for 2 years and assisted with Shalom’s monthly newsletter.  Shalom became Grace United Church of Christ, where Doris remained an honored member until her passing.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Amy; siblings Dean, Earl and Vi; spouse Charles E Perkin Sr (Chuck); son Charles E Perkin Jr (Butch); two infant sons, and grandson Charles E Perkin III (Chucky). 

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Diane, seven grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Grace United Church in Fort Atkinson. A light lunch and fellowship will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doris’s name may be made to the Humane Society of Jefferson County.
