Hoard Museum announces Christmas tree decorating contest

The Hoard Historical Museum in Fort Atkinson is seeking organizations and individuals to participate in a Christmas tree decorating contest.

“The holidays are such a special time for everyone,” said Merrilee Lee, director of the Hoard Historical Museum in a recent press release. “We are hoping that clubs, groups, families, businesses, and individuals alike would like to help spread holiday cheer in our community by participating in our contest,“ she said.

According to information released by the museum, twelve trees will be available for decorating on a first-come, first-served basis. To register for the tree-decorating contest, contact the Hoard Historical Museum at 920-563-7769, info@hoardmuseum.org, or at 401 Whitewater Ave. Fort Atkinson.

There is a $10 refundable registration fee for the trees. Once the tree is decorated, the registration fee will be returned.

The trees will be displayed outside the museum along the museum’s front parking lot sidewalk and the S. Fourth Street East sidewalk.

Trees will be decorated with wildlife-friendly decorations that are biodegradable or recyclable, such as dried fruit, birdseed, pinecones, salt-dough ornaments, and recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic, and glass, the release stated.

There will be no electricity available for the trees. Battery-powered lights are also prohibited, according to the release.

For decorating ideas, organizers suggest participants visit the museum’s Pinterest page: www.pinterest.com/hoardmuseum.

“There’s so many creative possibilities for decorating these trees. Sometimes the simplest decorations, like strings of popcorn or dried oranges are the best,” Lee said.

Trees must be decorated by Tuesday, Dec. 7; trees will be made available for decorating beginning Friday, Dec. 3. Trees will remain on display until Sunday, Dec. 26.

Two contests will be held, with each winner selected by members of the public, according to the release.

A first contest winner will be awarded the title of “Popular Choice,” The award will be given to the tree which receives the most votes by members of the public, identifying it as the public’s favorite tree.

A second contest winner will be awarded the title of “Most Bird and Wildlife Friendly Tree.”

The contest will be open to voters from Dec. 7 to 11. Prizes will be awarded to the top winner in each category, according to the release.
