Purdy elementary celebrates kindness

Students at Purdy Elementary School participated in “Random Acts of Kindness Week,” celebrated Feb. 15-19.

The concept was developed by the  Purdy’s Kindness Committee to help brighten the month of February, Kristine Hofer, a school office paraprofessional said.

This is the first year the school has offered a full week of activities for kindness awareness, Hofer continued.

A kindness initiative at the school was begun several years ago and focused on giving students an opportunity to catch classmates doing something kind.

Prizes are given to those caught in an act of kindness, Hofer noted.

Activities planned for the week included: Monday, students in each classroom were greeted by a Fort Atkinson Police Officer who hand-delivered a “kindness sticker” to each child; Tuesday, all students in grades k-5 received a “kind kid” granola bar at lunchtime; Wednesday, students received a DonorsChoose funded “kindness children’s book” to keep; Thursday, led by principal Leigh Ann Scheuerell via Zoom, students participated in all-school “kindness Bingo,” with everyone winning a “kindness pencil”; and Friday, students participated in a “kindness walk” inside the school building.

Students in grades K-5 earlier created a “kindness bag,” which was used to line the hallways as the students walked. The bags were lighted and instrumental music played as the school’s hallways were transformed into “Kindness Lane,” Hofer said.
