School District of Jefferson releases statement concerning school basement fire 

Editor’s note: In response to a fire occurring early Tuesday morning in the basement of East Elementary School within the School District of Jefferson, Superintendent Charles Urness has released the following statement:

As you know, school was canceled due to a basement fire at East Elementary School on September 17, 2024. The exact cause is still under investigation. Thanks to the prompt actions of the Jefferson Police and Fire Departments, the situation was under control rapidly. We are grateful for their quick response and the efforts of everyone involved in managing this incident.

At this time, no significant structural damage has been reported; however, smoke from the fire has resulted in soot throughout regions of the building. All capital referendum contractors we work with are bonded and insured. A fire/smoke restoration service is under contract to thoroughly clean the building of particulate matter before students and staff members return. As it turns out, that process takes people and time.

Because of the restoration services, we created an alternative plan for students and staff members from September 18 to 27, 2024. East students will attend some of our other District buildings during that time. There is no school on September 30, 2024. We hope to have everyone back at East Elementary School on October 1, 2024, but we may need to adjust. Details for the procedures and expectations we will use for East students during this time are below.

1. Regardless of how students normally arrive at school (other than 4K), student drop-off and pick-up will occur as usual at East Elementary School at regular times. Students will start their day with attendance, lunch count, breakfast, and morning meetings outside in the green space by the old tall flag pole at East. We will erect a tent before Friday morning. No one will be allowed in the building.

• AM 4K students should be dropped off as usual at East in the morning but should be picked up at 11:10 a.m. at West Elementary.

• PM 4K students should be dropped off at 11:50 a.m. at West Elementary and will be picked up at East Elementary at the end of the day.

• KidSpace will not be available before school at this time; KidSpace will contact their student’s families with further details.

2. We are keeping the drop-off and pick-up at East to prevent congestion in and around Milwaukee Street and Taft Avenue.

3. Shuttle buses will transport students to the following locations at approximately 8:25 a.m. and back to East at 2:30 p.m. Staff will travel with students on the shuttle buses to the alternative locations.

• Headstart, 4K & 5K students will be at West Elementary

• 1st & 2nd-grade students will be at Jefferson Middle School

• 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students will be at Jefferson High School

4. Classroom teachers will house themselves and teach in rooms in the schools listed above. Students will not leave the District campus during the school day. They will be under close supervision at all times.

5. Lunch will occur at alternate times in their assigned locations. Students in grades K – 5 will have a hot lunch option. 4K and Headstart will have sack lunches delivered to their classrooms at West.

6. We will have supplies for students because we know those items are normally kept in student desks. We will provide information about personal staff and student belongings left at East soon. Families with student medications will be contacted personally. Again, no one will be allowed in the building until further notice.

7. Students will be shuttled back to East Elementary School at the end of the day for pick-up. Parents may collect their child(ren) at the normal time, 2:55 p.m.

8. If your child needs to arrive late or leave early because of an appointment on any of the dates listed above, please contact the East Elementary School main office at 920-675-1400 or email benteb@sdoj.org. You will be directed to drop off/pick up your child at the alternative school office.

We realize this is unusual and less than ideal. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment, albeit different from the normal day at East Elementary School. (Think summer school combined with a field trip). We can do this together; we will ensure students are safe. That being said, any parent who does not feel comfortable with this plan may contact the East Elementary School main office at 920-675-1400 to discuss daily attendance.

We appreciate the support and understanding of our school community during this time. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance, and we will continue to keep everyone updated as we move forward with the restoration, ongoing remodel, and any necessary repairs.

Hasta el momento, no se han reportado daños estructurales significativos; sin embargo, el humo del incendio ha provocado hollín en todas partes del edificio. Todos los contratistas de referéndum de capital con los que trabajamos están garantizados y asegurados. Se contrata un servicio de restauración de incendios/humo para limpiar minuciosamente el edificio de partículas antes de que regresen los estudiantes y el personal. Resulta que ese proceso requiere personas y tiempo.

Debido a los servicios de restauración, creamos un plan alternativo para los estudiantes y miembros del personal del 18 al 27 de septiembre de 2024. Los estudiantes de East Elementary asistirán a algunos de nuestros otros edificios del Distrito durante ese tiempo. No habrá clases el 30 de septiembre de 2024. Esperamos que todos regresen a East Elementary el 1 de octubre de 2024, pero es posible que tengamos que hacer ajustes. Los detalles de los procedimientos y expectativas que usaremos para los estudiantes de la primaria East durante este tiempo se encuentran a continuación.

Las familias con medicamentos de los estudiantes serán contactadas personalmente. Nuevamente, no se permitirá la entrada a nadie al edificio hasta nuevo aviso.
   
4. Los estudiantes serán trasladados de regreso a East Elementary al final del día para que los recojan. Los padres/tutores pueden recoger a sus hijos/as a la hora habitual, 2:55 p.m.

Se le indicará que deje ó recoja a su hijo/a en la oficina de la escuela alternativa.
   

Nos damos cuenta de que esto es inusual y menos que ideal. Estamos comprometidos a brindar un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro, aunque diferente del día normal en East Elementary. (Piense en la escuela de verano combinada con una excursión). Podemos hacer esto juntos; nos aseguraremos de que los estudiantes estén seguros. Dicho esto, cualquier padre que no se sienta cómodo con este plan puede comunicarse con la oficina principal de East Elementary al 920-675-1400 para discutir la asistencia diaria.
