Sherwood ‘Deadwood’ R. Holmes

Sherwood “Deadwood” R. Holmes, a man known for his exceptional humor, generosity, and thoughtful nature, passed away peacefully in Jefferson, WI, on May 18, 2024, at the age of 81. Born to the late Earl and Erma (Steinke) Holmes on May 31, 1942, in Chicago, IL, Deadwood was a man who made a lasting impression on everyone he met.

In 1971, Deadwood opened the doors to Deadwood’s Pub, a local establishment that quickly became a cornerstone of the community under his charismatic leadership. For sixteen years, he poured his heart into the pub, not only serving drinks but also creating an atmosphere where friendships blossomed. His remarkable memory for names and favorite drinks made patrons feel uniquely valued, and his support for local sports teams through sponsorships showcased his deep commitment to community spirit.

After leaving the pub business, Deadwood continued to make his mark by working with his brother Darrell outside of Chicago. He later ventured into the car industry as a salesman, where his gift for storytelling and personal connection helped him succeed until his well-deserved retirement.

An avid fisherman and sports enthusiast, Deadwood’s love for life was infectious. Above all, family was the cornerstone of his existence. His generosity knew no bounds, and it was often said he would give the shirt off his back without a second thought.

Deadwood will be dearly missed and forever remembered as a man who brought laughter and kindness into the lives of all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Laurie (Steve) Eisfeldt, Michael (girlfriend Lynn Allain) Holmes, Daniel (significant other Tanya Shanks) Holmes, Yvonne (John) Lewicki, Jim (Gretchen) Courtier, Dan (Gina) Courtier and Connie (Tom) Miller; grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Christopher, Nicholas, Devin Lehmann, Logan Lehmann, Mandy (Chris), Jonathan (Antelma), Angela, Kyle (Sara), Ryan, Tyler (Courtney), Zac (Kenzie), and Alec; 15 great grandchildren; brothers, Darrell (Cheryl)Holmes, Clifford (Denise) Holmes and Patrick Holmes; sister, Darlene Witte; his first wife, Karen Holmes and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Donna Holmes; stillborn son, Steven Ray; sisters, Stella, Shirley, Sandra and June; brothers, Rodger, Earl Wayne and Sam and his beloved pets, Oscar and Oliver.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church until the time of service.

We’ve known Deadsy for over 40 years and we were best friends. We loved each other and we would tell each other every time we talked on the phone or in person. He is the kind of man that you couldn’t help but love. We had many trips together with our wives. And they were always a great time. We will never forget him, and always remember the good times. GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS FAMILY.
