By Kim McDarison

Travis Maze, who is listed on the Jefferson County website as a patrol captain with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, was appointed Wednesday by Gov. Tony Evers to the position of Jefferson County sheriff.

The governor’s office announced in April that it was seeking applicants to fill a vacancy in the sheriff’s office.

Also in April, longtime Jefferson County Sheriff Paul Milbrath announced that he would be retiring, with his last day served on Thursday, Aug. 8.

According to information shared by the governor’s office in April, a new sheriff would serve for the remainder of Milbrath’s term, which ends in January of 2027.

The governor’s office sought applicants through Friday, May 3.
