Who in Wisconsin would vote for Trump?

Letter to the editor:

Even before the jury of 12 regular citizens found Trump guilty in the NY fraud trial, it was clear that the guilty party lived in a world where he was able to get away with many things. And his recent rants about turning back the clock to the 50s with a strong addition of autocracy are troubling to say the least. It made me wonder, again, who in Wisconsin would vote for him?

Surely not anyone serving in our military. Not after his disparaging the Medal of Honor honorees in recent comments. Not after he congratulated Vladimir Putin after the the successful hostage release was accomplished by President Biden.

Surely not any parent of a 14 year old who hears Trump disparaging people for their looks or their ethnicity. These teens are our future and in my view are far beyond the toxic racism and prejudice demonstrated by his behavior.

Surely not any Christian, and we have a lot in Watertown. His callous manipulation of his evangelical base should be called out for what it is – unchristian.

Surely not any healthcare professional who sees the reality of rural hospitals closing in GOP-controlled states and Trump vowing, yet again, to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And we see, is his choice of Vance, someone who experienced, in literary detail, the consequences of poor families struggling with lack of insurance and no help battling the scourge of drug addiction. And yet he dutifully falls in line with Trump’s toxic healthcare policies.

Surely not any educator. He wants to re-enable the Public School Destroyer Betsy DeVos as he vows to dismantle the Department of Education.

As I left the Dodge County Fair Sunday night, passing under a giant inflated Trump balloon, it was dawning on me that there are things I don’t understand. As the fair neared its end, the idyllic Wisconsin families packed up their show animals and pulled in the trailers and the kids took down their proudly displayed 4H banners. And on the back railing, there were the blue TRUMP yard signs, sitting sideways, ready to take back to their farms.

Thanks for your articulate letter, Ben. Certain things defy logic. For folks who favor Trump, I suggest a casual perusal of Project 2025 to see the details of his vision for our nation. Thankfully, there is an alternative. Kamala and Tim understand the middle class because they grew up there. The Republicans in Wisconsin have paid back their constituents by repeatedly “gaveling in and gaveling out” when faced with real issues like funding education, gun control, and environmental protections. Vote BLUE in November.
