21 injured in 85-car pileup on I-39/90 near Janesville, state patrol reports

Some 85 cars were involved in a crash on I-39/90 between Beloit and Janesville, according to information released Friday by the Wisconsin State Patrol. 

According to the release, the crash occurred Friday at 12:30 p.m. 

The state patrol responded after receiving reports of the crash which was in Rock County near Milepost 181. 

Upon arrival, troopers found the interstate blocked in both directions. Southbound traffic, on Friday was being diverted at Avalon Road and northbound traffic was being diverted at Shopiere Road. Travelers were advised to avoid the area, the release noted. 

The state patrol reported Friday at 9:45 p.m. that the highway was cleared and reopened to traffic in both directions. 

The release noted that 85 vehicles were involved and 21 people were taken to area hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. 

One fatality was reported in an unrelated crash, according to the release.  

“This incident occurred during a severe winter weather event with snow, ice and whiteout conditions believed to be a factor in the initial crash,” the release stated. 

The release advised motorists to check 511wi.gov for the latest traffic conditions.

The Wisconsin State Patrol was assisted in investigating the crash by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Beloit Police Department, Janesville Police Department, Janesville Fire/EMS, Beloit Fire/EMS, Town of Beloit Fire/EMS, Town of Turtle Fire/EMS, Milton Fire/EMS, Footville Fire/EMS, Evansville Fire/EMS, Clinton Fire/EMS, Orfordville Fire/EMS, Edgerton Fire/EMS, Rockton, IL EMS, Rock County Medical Examiner, Rock County Highway Department, and numerous tow services, the release noted.
