Mickelson named League of Wisconsin Municipalities communication specialist

The League of Wisconsin Municipalities has announced that Kristin Mickelson has joined the organization as its engagement and communications specialist. 

According to a news release, Michelson follows Gail Sumi, who recently retired from the role.

Mickelson recently served six years as the public relations and communications manager for the city of Whitewater.

As the league’s communication specialist, Mickelson will lead the production of league communications, including the monthly magazine, newsletters, social media, and website. She will work in collaboration with league staff and members to deliver messaging on key issues. In addition, Mickelson will coordinate branding initiatives, including procuring league-branded materials and marketing items, the release stated.  

“This is a critical time for the league’s role as the information conduit between city and village governments, and state policy makers,” Jerry Deschane, league executive director, was quoted as saying in the release.  

“Our communications will be aimed at helping state and local leaders collaboratively reinvent the state and local fiscal partnership. We are excited to watch as Kristin’s new vision, building on Gail’s legacy, unfolds,” he added. 

About Mickelson

While in college, Mickelson, who is a native of  Janesville, developed an interest in her community. She joined the parks and recreation staff and is a member of the Janesville Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and the Marketing Committee for the Children’s Museum of Rock County. 

Mickelson continues to reside in Janesville where she lives with her husband, Bill, who works for the City of Beloit Department of Public Works. The couple has two sons.

While serving as a public relations and communications director for the city of Whitewater, Mickelson’s responsibilities included oversight of the local PEG television channel, creation of a new website design, and performing public relations duties involving all of the city’s departments. 

Additionally, she managed the city’s social media pages, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Polco.

Prior to joining the team in Whitewater, Mickelson served in a public relations role in the private sector, working for Blain’s Farm and Fleet.
