Fort Community Foundation names Geyer as new board member

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation has announced that Bonnie Geyer has joined its board of directors.

According to a news release, Geyer was nominated to the board by the Fort Atkinson Historical Society and will be taking the seat of the foundation’s 2022 Chairman Loren Gray.

“We are so pleased to have Bonnie joining the Board. Just a cursory glance at her resume and extensive community involvement shows a striking commitment to the places she has called home. She will be a great asset to the foundation,” Gray was quoted as saying in the release.

Said Geyer within the release: “I consider it a privilege to be chosen to serve on the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation Board of Directors. The foundation is a trusted organization that strengthens and enriches our community, offers support to those who live here, and provides a vehicle for the generosity of area residents.”

About Geyer

According to the release, Geyer graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an undergraduate degree in education and a master’s degree in adult education.  Her work experience has concentrated on children and families.

After serving for several years as a teacher, Geyer took on the role of program director at the Wisconsin Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, where she developed and ran a statewide training program for home visitors who supported families facing challenges to successful parenting. Geyer also served on the National Parent Aide Association Board and wrote a booklet for youth coaches, which was distributed throughout Wisconsin and in other states.

She next served as a senior outreach specialist for the UW-Extension Family Living on the Madison campus, continuing to run the home visitor training program, while also developing and running conferences that focused on family support.

Before moving to the Fort Atkinson area in 2006, Geyer and her family lived in Stoughton, where she was heavily involved in the community, serving on the school board, chairing the city ethics board, and starting the Stoughton Holiday Fund, which provided a holiday meal and toys to area families. Her practice of civic involvement was continued in Fort Atkinson where she has served on the Historical Society’s Board of Directors for eight years and has been an active member of Fort HealthCare’s Women Who Care, the Fort Atkinson Chapter of AAUW, and the Tuesday Club study group.

About the board

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation Board of Directors consists of five members, each serving a term of five years. Volunteer members are chosen for their community involvement and knowledge of the educational, cultural, civic, public and charitable needs of the Fort Atkinson area.

Along with the historical society, appointments to the board are made by the School District of Fort Atkinson, PremierBank as trustee, the Fort Atkinson Area Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Atkinson City Council. Directors represent the community in general and do not represent or act as advocates of their respective appointing bodies.

In 2023, members of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation Board of Directors include Chairman Sue Johnson, Vice Chairman Sally Koehler, Treasurer Lisa Caras, Secretary Jim Schulenburg and Geyer, serving as a director. The board of directors is supported by Sue Hartwick, who serves as the foundation’s executive director.
