UW-Whitewater Music Department announces February entertainment lineup

The College of Arts and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has announced its lineup of entertainment opportunities available throughout February. 

All music events will be held in the Light Recital Hall in the Greenhill Center of the Arts, 950 West Main St., Whitewater, unless otherwise specified. Tickets are available in advance and can be purchased online at tickets.uww.edu or by calling: 262-472-2222. When purchasing tickets at the door at the time of the event, there is a $2 surcharge. 

According to information released by the department, the lineup kicks off with Music Mosaics: Scandinavian Songs, Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. 

The performance features faculty members and guest artist Anna Hersey for an evening of Scandinavian music, who present a repertoire for voice and piano by Scandinavian composers including Elfrida Andrée, Edvard Grieg, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Ture Rangström, and Sigurd von Koch. Along with Hersey, performers include: Karen Boe, piano; Brian Leeper, baritone, and Rachel Wood, mezzo-soprano. All proceeds from the Music Mosaics series go directly towards scholarships for department of music students.     

A performance by Joseph Murphy, on saxophone, will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. 

Performing as the month’s first solo guest artist, Murphy, a professor from Mansfield University, will bring to the audience an eclectic program of contemporary works.

“Western Skies,” will be performed Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The performance features UW-Whitewater professor Michael Hackett, who will be teaming up with Tim Coffman. The sextet band will perform music from the recently released “Western Skies,” recording, featuring Sharel Cassity.

Biggs, Schmidt-Swartz Duo will be performed Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. 

The Biggs, Schmidt-Swarts guest artist Duo combines the music of Ben Schmidt-Swartz, who plays saxophone and accordion, with that of Christopher Biggs, electronics. The music “is full of surprise and invention,” according to the release.  

Music Mosaics: Masterpieces of String Chamber Music will be performed Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. 

According to the release, the chamber music repertoire for strings is “full of many grand masterpieces.”  Faculty performers Leanne Kelso, violin; Benjamin Whitcomb, cello, and Bradley Townsend, bass, will celebrate their love for music. All proceeds from the Music Mosaics series go directly towards scholarships for department of music students.     

Percussion Studio Concert will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

The Percussion Studio will be hosting its semester concert. The students of UW-Whitewater’s Percussion Studio will present solo works for percussion.

Soloist Joseph Murphy is presented with his saxophone. The performance will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
