City officials enact snow emergency beginning Thursday at noon

Fort Atkinson city officials have announced that a snow emergency will go into effect Thursday at noon, and remain in effect until Friday, at noon.

During a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from public streets and alleys, according to the city’s announcement.

Residents may park in municipal lots with the exclusion of the lot directly behind the Fort Atkinson Municipal Building. Parking lot signs are posted within lots where residents can find specific rules about parking during snow events, the announcement stated.

According to the announcement, the weather event is anticipated to bring snowfall accumulations in the 4- to 8-inch range, with high winds and blowing and drifting snow possible as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15.

As stipulated by city ordinance, a snow emergency will be enacted when the city of Fort Atkinson accumulates greater than 2 inches of snowfall within a 24-hour period, the release states.

The Department of Public Works staff will work throughout the day Thursday to maintain continuous safe travel on the highways and secondary roadways as the snow falls, but areas of slippery conditions and slick spots may remain around the area. Lower traffic residential roadways will remain snow-covered until the snowfall wanes and the winds begin to subside, the release continued.

Residents are asked to exercise caution when driving during this winter event. Department staff will work to maintain the highways and secondary streets until the afternoon, at which time they will break to get some rest. Staff will return to complete a full citywide snow removal operation in the evening and through the night.

During inclement weather, the city will provide updates via its website, social media and local media outlets.
