City officials enact snow emergency beginning Friday at Midnight

Fort Atkinson city officials have announced that a snow emergency will be in effect Friday, March 10, from midnight until noon.

During a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from public streets and alleys, according to the city’s announcement.

Residents may park in municipal lots with the exclusion of the lot directly behind the Fort Atkinson Municipal Building. Parking lot signs are posted within lots where residents can find specific rules about parking during snow events, the announcement stated.

As stipulated by city ordinance, a snow emergency will be enacted when the city of Fort Atkinson accumulates greater than 2 inches of snowfall within a 24-hour period, the release states.

According to information released by the city, the Department of Public Works will continue to monitor a winter storm event forecasted for Thursday afternoon into Friday.

The declaration of a snow emergency assists staff in removal and cleanup of any accumulated snowfall throughout the evening Thursday, and early morning hours Friday, in preparation for the morning commute to work and school. Snow emergencies are used as a tool to help staff complete snow removal operations as efficiently as possible, the release stated.

“The department will maintain the main highways and secondary roadways throughout the evening hours with a combination of on-call personnel and scheduled crew members,” the release noted that a goal is to keep “reasonably clear and passable” main highways and secondary roadways overnight during the heaviest snowfall.

“Department staff have planned for citywide snow management operation to begin early Friday morning, continuing until all roadways have been cleared. As with any Wisconsin winter snow event, some areas around the city may continue to remain snow covered and slippery during the snowfall event,” the release continued.

During inclement weather, the city will provide updates via its website, social media and local media outlets.
