One dead after car and motorcycle collide in Sullivan

A driver of a motorcycle has died following a two-vehicle crash in the town of Sullivan, according to information released Wednesday by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. 

The release stated that deputies responded to the scene on State Highway 106 near Mehring Road Wednesday at 6:25 p.m. 

A preliminary investigation at the scene found that the driver of a vehicle was traveling northbound on Mehring Road and came to a stop sign at the intersection of Mehring Road and State Highway 106. The driver next pulled out onto State Highway 106 heading westbound. A motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on State Highway 106 and the two vehicles collided when the driver of the westbound vehicle pulled out onto the highway. Both drivers were the only occupants of their respective vehicles, the release stated. 

According to the release, the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the motorcycle was critically injured, succumbing to those injuries at the scene. 

During the incident, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Rome and Sullivan Fire Department, Jefferson EMS, and the Jefferson County Emergency Communications center, which provided traffic control at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the release noted.
