‘Deafened by the silence on gun control’

Letter to the editor:

I am deafened by the silence on gun control. In the spirit of provoking thought, here’s a poem I’ve written.

Mommy, Mommy, Get Me A Tommy Gun

How now brown cow, have we come to this

Society-failed men use the salve of violence to sooth the devil within of

slight, desperation and betrayal on the killing fields of the Innocent

Motive? The permanent trauma from someone’s “bad day- rage”.

Crayons, pencils, backpacks and bullet-proof vests, ready for school!

Off to learn our ABCs, the future of our world boards the big yellow bus, but will they come home and did the little ones prepare their Wills? Oh, and the teachers, are at target practice in the gymnasium, have memorized lock-down protocol. Bolted doors and closed windows, meet official war gear. Madness, you say, no this is America.

Wanted: An automatic machine gun in every home for peace and safety.

Get one at the local kiosk, or the Farmer’s Market … put it on Santa’s list

Machine guns,

Machine guns,

Mommy, won’t you get me one? Everyone has one and I want to feel safe.

And all the adults sat silently praying for change

worried about the naughty words in books.

That poem by Margaret Schroeder is absolute on target and makes people think. I hope she has sent to many newspapers around the country for publication. I am sending it to some of my contracts.

Guns are tools. They don’t kill people. People kill people. That will never change. A car can kill people, look at waukesha. Should we ban cars? For the record, machine guns are illegal, you cannot own a machine gun. This poem is misleading, and written by someone who knows nothing of guns or how they work.

Thank you for your on-target poem Margaret! Southern Poverty Law Center states that hate has gone mainstream. There are 733 hate groups in the United States. The combination of hate and the prevalence of guns is a disastrous combination.

Thanks Margaret for expressing our bewilderment and heartbreak. It Is hard to comprehend that having a gun made specifically for killing people is something people even want to have in their home. How is it that rampant murder of our children is acceptable for many of our neighbors?
Guns don’t kill people. People with guns kill people. Maybe we should guard our gun supply more carefully.
