The Fort Atkinson City Council proclaimed April as Fair Housing Month during its meeting held Tuesday, April 20.
The proclamation, read aloud by City Manager Rebecca LeMire, noted that April is celebrated nationally as Fair Housing Month and this year marks the 53rd anniversary celebrated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development of the Fair Housing Act, which was signed into law on April 11, 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
“The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and family status. The act furthers the beliefs advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the other heroes of the Civil Rights Movement,” LeMire read.
