The Hoard Historical Museum, Fort Atkinson, and the Rome-Sullivan and Bark River Woods historical societies each have announced events slated for this weekend.
The Hoard Historical Museum will be hosting an outdoor concert and dance with music performed by a band called: “Vintage Swing Band.” The event, which will feature World War II era music, along with an exhibit featuring World War II uniforms, dance lessons and a costume contest will be held Saturday, June 24, with music starting at 6 p.m.
Additionally, as a separate event, the Rome-Sullivan Historical Society and the Bark River Woods Historical Society will each, on Sunday, June 25, be hosting an open house between 1 and 4 p.m. The open houses will be held at the same time, but in two locations, according to information released by the societies.
Saturday at the Hoard Museum
According to information released by the Hoard Historical Museum, Saturday’s event, held in collaboration with the Johnson Creek Historical Society and sponsored by PremierBank, features a 20-piece band and several vocalists, who will be performing songs made popular by “The Andrews Sisters.”
Attendees will find the performance venue in “the backyard” of the museum.”
The museum is located at 401 Whitewater Ave.
The release encourages participants to arrive with chairs and blankets as no seating will be provided by the museum.
Participants are also encouraged to dance during the performance, Hoard Historical Museum Director Merrilee Lee noted in the release.
To aid those unfamiliar with swing dancing, Lee stated that “free lessons” will be provided.
Lessons will be held between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., and provided by Al and Rachel Henriquez of Watertown-based Ready 2 Dance Studio, according to the release. Lessons will be held “at the rear of the museum along Foster Street,” the release continued.
Further, the release stated, a “Rosie the Riveter” and “Uncle Sam” look-alike contest will be held.
As stated in the release, both characters have become iconic images associated with World War II.
Contest participants are asked to appear on the Museum grounds before 7 p.m., at which time judging by members of the Vintage Swing Band will take place. Contest winners will win a prize, the release stated.
Participants will find food and drinks, including beer, available for sale during the event, with many of the offered items similar to those one might have found during a World War II era dance, the release noted.
In addition, Inside the museum, Jefferson County area historical societies will be displaying World War II items from their collections. The exhibit will be available for viewing exclusively during the event.
Sunday in Sullivan and Hebron
According to the Rome-Sullivan release, the society’s open house will be held at N3866 West St., Sullivan, and the Bark River Woods Historical Society’s open house will be held at Green Isle Drive in downtown Hebron.
Attending each open house is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed.
According to the release, “each museum has many unusual artifacts with something to interest everyone.”
