Short its bicycle race following storm, children’s biathlon held Saturday

Saturday’s Fort Atkinson Youth Triathlon turned into a biathlon following the severe storm that downed trees and cut electricity throughout the community Friday night.

The Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation Department had planned for youngsters of all ages to swim a 25-meter race, bicycle the full course through Rock River Park and then run a short distance.

However, the storm littered the park’s roadways with trees, branches, twigs and standing water, prompting organizers to drop the bicycle portion of the race.

A crowd of supporters applauded the runners as they left the swimming pool and headed out on the run, as well as when they each crossed the finish line and received a medal.

A We Train Glow Party was held Wednesday evening to celebrate all the hard work undertaken in the five weekly training sessions in which many of the children participated in anticipation of the 15th annual event.
