Jefferson County Literacy Council seeking volunteers

The Jefferson County Literacy Council (JCLC) has announced that it is seeking “retired teachers and individuals with extra time and talents in Jefferson County” to join the organization as volunteers.

As stated in a recent release, in a bid to foster community development and empower individuals through education, the organization is seeking volunteers to contribute to its mission.

Established in 2001 in the basement of the Fort Atkinson public library, JCLC is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving literacy in the community, the release noted.

The mission of JCLC extends beyond the confines of traditional education. Recognizing that improving literacy is a catalyst for economic growth, poverty reduction, crime prevention, and enhanced overall quality of life, the organization has been steadfast in its commitment to literacy development,” the release read.

Elaborating on its purpose and a need for volunteers, the release focused on the following:

• Funding Sources — A Community Effort: JCLC operates through a combination of funding sources, including grants, United Way contributions, contracted services, private and corporate donations, as well as fundraising events. This diverse financial support ensures that all services provided by JCLC are free to the students, removing barriers to education and fostering inclusivity.

• Volunteer Opportunity — ESL and GED Prep Instructors Needed: The council is seeking passionate individuals to contribute their skills as ESL (English as a Second Language) or GED prep test instructors. Whether in a one-on-one setting or a small classroom environment, volunteers will play a pivotal role in empowering learners on their educational journey.

• Benefits of Volunteering — Making a Difference, One Lesson at a Time: Volunteers will have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of individuals seeking to enhance their language skills or obtain their GED. All materials and teaching tools will be provided, and the time commitment is minimal, offering flexibility for those with busy schedules.

The council, according to its release, is particularly interested in reaching out to members of the community who are retired teachers, passionate about education or have talents they are eager to share, and would like to join the JCLC’s team of volunteers.

Did our school system fail? Should literacy have been grounded in our school’s curricula?
