DOT to hold U.S. 18 retaining wall repair project public meeting

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has announced that it will be conducting a public involvement meeting to discuss the U.S. 18 retaining wall repair project in Helenville.

Construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2024.

According to information released by the department, the meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Helenville Fire Station, N4737 N. Helenville Rd, Helenville.

The objective of the meeting is to familiarize the public with the purpose and need for the project and to obtain input on the proposed improvements, the release noted.

As stated in the release, the project includes removing the first layer of the wall that spans the entire length of the wall. Excavation behind the wall will occur in locations where the wall panels are tipping toward the sidewalk. The select wall panels will be removed and re-set so they are in line with the rest of the wall. The area behind the wall will then be backfilled and the new layer will be cast in place along the entire length of the wall. The railing will be removed and re-set in its existing location.

Adjacent property owners are encouraged to attend the meeting. If unable to attend or for more information contact WisDOT Project Manager Craig Hardy, by phone: 608-246-5406 or email: craig.hardy@dot.wi.gov. Written comments can be mailed to Craig Hardy at 2101 Wright St., Madison, WI 53704.

Citizens who are deaf or hard of hearing and require an interpreter may request one by contacting Hardy at least three working days prior to the meeting, the release stated.
