City declares Saturday snow emergency

Fort Atkinson city officials have declared a snow emergency which will be in effect Saturday between midnight and 6 p.m.

During the snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from public streets and alleys, according to information released by city officials Thursday.

As stipulated by city ordinance, a snow emergency is enacted when the city is anticipating snow accumulations greater than two inches over a 24-hour period.

The snow emergency has been declared in response to Friday’s predicted storm.

According to the release, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Friday and Saturday.

As stated in the release, city plowing operations are anticipated to begin around 6 a.m. on Friday morning, with a plan to keep the city’s highways and main thoroughfares passable during the storm. A “full city plow” is currently planned for the forecasted end to the snowfall around 5 a.m. Saturday morning. A “downtown pickup” will occur early Sunday morning around 1 a.m.

“We will prioritize main roads following the storm and work into neighborhoods soon after. Alleyways within the city will be completed within 24 hours of the snowfall subsiding. We appreciate your patience and please allow our drivers extra space and time when maneuvering around town,” Tom Williamson, superintendent of Public Works, was quoted as saying in the release.

Residents are reminded not to plow or shovel snow into the street during snow removal and to keep garbage cans off the street, the release read.

Proposed times, as outlined in the release, may change as the weather moves into the area, the release noted.

During inclement weather, the city staff will provide updates via its website, social media and local media outlets, the release concluded.

Those with questions are encouraged to contact Andy Selle, director of Public Works, by phone: 920-397-9901.
