U.S. 18 retaining wall improvements in Jefferson County to begin tomorrow

Reconstruction work along U.S. 18 to a retaining wall south of Helenville Road in Jefferson County will begin tomorrow, according to information  released by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The office of Gov. Tony Evers recently approved a $299,439 contract to complete the work, the release read.

The prime contractor on the project is Highway Landscapers.

The project will include the removal of wall panels and the realignment of the remainder of the wall, the release noted.

According to information found on the department’s website, the retaining wall on U.S. 18 is tipping toward the sidewalk and in need of repair.

Work includes removing the coping from the retaining wall that spans the entire length of the wall. Excavation behind the wall will occur in locations where the wall panels are tipping toward the sidewalk.

“The select wall panels are going to be removed and re-set so they are in line with the rest of the wall. The area behind the wall will then be backfilled and the new coping will be cast in place along the entire length of the wall. The railing will be removed as well and re-set in its existing location,” the website read.

During construction, the release continued, U.S. 18 will remain open to traffic, which will be managed through lane closures and flagging operations. Sidewalks will remain closed, according to the website.

A completion of the project is anticipated in early December, the release continued.
