‘World’s Cutest Rescue Dog’ to headline Humane Society race

The Humane Society of Jefferson County will be hosting a dog-friendly, official 5k race at Jefferson County Fair Park from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22.

Guest of honor at the Jefferson event will be Lamb Chop, a 12-year-old Maltese from Wauwatosa that has been named People magazine’s “World’s Cutest Rescue Dog” contest winner.

At 8:45 a.m., Lamb Chop and her owner will make a presentation prior to the timed run race. From 9 to 9:16 a.m., timed and untimed race heats will start every two minutes.

The race awards ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m.

More than 350 human runners and many dog runners are expected to be participating for this official, timed and nationally ranked 5k race. There will be open-use dog pools, a speed running lure chase and a dog agility course.

On display will be unique reptiles, including lizards and snakes from Archie’s Angels, a herpetological rescue group from Green Bay.

The Humane Society of Jefferson County has been serving the community since 1922. It provides life-saving services for abandoned, stray, and surrendered animals, as well as a wide range of community animal services and humane education.  Each year, the shelter helps save, serve and provide forever homes to more than 1,000 animals in need.
