Jefferson County offers free farmers market vouchers to qualifying seniors

Jefferson County is offering free farmers market vouchers to residents ages 60 and older — 55 and older if the resident is a Native American — according to information recently released by the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Jefferson County.

To qualify for the voucher, those eligible must verify verbally that their income is at or below 185% of the federal poverty level guideline, which is, according to the release, “income of $1,986 or less for one person or $2,686 for two people.”

For those who are unable to leave the house and shop, the county recommends they ask about a “representative form,” allowing a friend or family member to make purchases for them.

Some assistance is available for those who need rides to the markets. Residents are advised to ask about the program when calling for a voucher.

According to the release, per USDA, SFMNP participation is allowed for those living in assisted living or nursing homes as long as the food is for the recipient, and not for congregate meals.

Seniors enrolled in the program will receive a voucher for $25 per household.

These vouchers can be used at farmers markets around Wisconsin and roadside stands as long as there is a yellow sign indicating that they accept the vouchers. These vouchers are used to purchase locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs, the release stated.

The Fort Atkinson Farmers Market is among markets that honor the vouchers, ADRC Dementia Care Specialist Heather Janes noted.

Vouchers are good through Oct. 31, 2021, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
