The Irvin L. Young Memorial Library has announced it will be hosting a presentation about the Whitewater Effigy Mounds Preserve.
The presentation will be held in the library’s Community Room. The library is located at 431 W. Center St., Whitewater.
The presentation will be held Monday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the free program and no registration is required, according to a news release.
The 60-minute presentation is designed for people who have never visited the mound preserve, as well as for those who wish to reconnect with it after time away. Questions are welcome throughout the talk, the release noted.
According to information released by the library, Kori Oberle, a member of the Whitewater Landmarks Commission, a historian and award-winning author, will speak about the history of the Effigy Mounds Preserve, which, according to signage at the preserve site, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, and has been a designated local landmark since 1994.
When Oberle returned to her hometown of Whitewater in 2013, she renewed her connection with the Whitewater Effigy Mounds Preserve and has been working to make it more accessible, the release stated.
Within the release, Oberle described the preserve, calling it a “special, sacred and artistic landscape that is several thousands of years old. Indigenous peoples created this space, and because it has persisted until now, we can see a bit of what their world looked like.”
