Editor’s note: This is the first in a multipart series about dementia and brain health focusing on providing avenues of information and understanding, with emphasis on information that is helpful for caregivers. The information in this series has been supplied by the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Jefferson County.
An Alzheimer’s Association Latinos Symposium will be held May 20-21.
This virtual conference will provide an overview of the current needs, Alzheimer’s research findings, and practice knowledge that informs the care of Latino and Hispanic individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families. It will also provide a platform for the development of collaborations and support among health care professionals, early career researchers and trainees.
Statistics suggest that the incidence of dementia is greater in Latinos and Hispanics compared to Whites. The prevention, diagnosis, and care provided to individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias are greatly influenced by socioeconomic and cultural factors.
Through abstract and presentation topics that span from biomarkers to dementia care, symposium attendees will achieve the following learning objectives:
- Describe the impact of cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic factors in Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
- Discuss and adopt strategies to improve recruitment and retention of Latinos and Hispanics in Alzheimer’s and related dementia research.
- Consider the challenges and opportunities associated with the assessment of cognitive impairment in Latinos and Hispanics.
- Identify strategies to improve early detection, diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer’s and related dementias in Latinos and Hispanics.
- Discuss recent research on risk factors and biomarkers for Alzheimer’s and related dementias in Latinos and Hispanics.
- Describe strategies to provide care and support the health of Latinos and Hispanics living Alzheimer’s and related dementias and their caregivers.
- Establish and leverage national and international collaborations to advance Alzheimer’s and related dementias research in Latinos and Hispanics.
