The Fort Atkinson-Eli Pierce Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has announced that Jefferson High School student Payton Schmidt is among this year’s recipients of the “Good Citizen of the Year” award.
The organization names several students from area high schools annually.
Schmidt, along with other recipients whom the organization has yet to announce, will be honored during a luncheon which the organization will hold in March, chapter spokesperson Chris Spangler recently noted.
According to information released by the group, Schmidt is a senior and performs academically in the top 4% of her class.
Additionally, the release stated, she was elected class president after serving as vice-president in her freshmen and sophomore years. She also is a member of her school’s student council, and serves as a Tomorrow’s Hope ambassador, having been co-president of the group for two years.
Schmidt is the social media manager for her school’s J-Club, which works to maintain school spirit, according to the release.
Further, Schmidt has enjoyed a golfing career through her four years of high school, and was named a four-time Rock Valley Conference “Player of the Year,” four-time First Team All-Conference , a three-time All-State player and 3-time Academic All-State golfer. She has set three school records during the course of her high school golfing career, the release stated.
Schmidt also has enjoyed participating in musical opportunities at her school. She was named “outstanding vocalist” in her freshmen year, and has been known to sing the National Anthem at sporting and civic events. She also has won medals in Solo And Ensemble contests.
When not in school, Schmidt works at the Jefferson Golf Course, where she helps young players learn the sport and she babysits. She is active in her church, where she plays the piano and guitar, and sings. In the past, she has helped the Optimist Club and the Jefferson Snow Hawks, the release continued.
Describing Schmidt, one of her teachers said, as quoted in the release, that she is “motivated, thoughtful, organized and reliable. Payton is what you get when intelligence meets application.”
Schmidt plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she intends to study human performance. She additionally plans to play college-level golf. According to the release, Schmidt said her goal is to earn a doctorate in physical therapy, and, one day, she hopes to open a locally based clinic.
The Daughters of the American Revolution have participated in the Good Citizen scholarship program for outstanding seniors in participating high schools since 1934, the release noted.
Students are chosen for the award based on scholastic achievement, leadership, and school and community service.
