Dementia support, LEGO large builds, composting among upcoming presentations at Whitewater library

Several events, including a support group for caregivers helping fellow community members with dementia, an opportunity to view LEGO large builds, and a workshop focusing on learning to compost, will be held in May, according to information recently released by the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library, Whitewater.

The library is located at 431 West Center St., and the events are free and open to the public.

Information about three upcoming events follows.

Dementia Friends informational session

According to information released by the library, an informational group will be held in support of “a growing movement of people who are helping fellow community members living with dementia.”

The hour-long session will focus on teaching participants about “simple things” one can do to help support a person living with dementia.

As described within the release, the hour-long event is not a training session, but instead a discussion led by a “Dementia Friends Champion.”

According to the Dementia Friends USA website, a Dementia Friends Champion is a volunteer who has participated in training that prepares that person to “encourage others to make a positive difference to a person living with dementia in their community. A Dementia Frieds Champion can lead a live Dementia Friends session that gives people information about the personal impact of dementia and what they can do to help.”

As noted in the library’s release, those who attend will be encouraged to use their “new understanding of dementia” to take “practical action” to help someone living with dementia within the community.

“The action can be as big or as small as you choose — every action counts,” the release stated.

The informational session will be held Thursday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m., in the library’s community room.

Registration is requested.

Those interested in registering for the session may do so by visiting the the library’s website: whitewaterlibrary.org, and using the “Events – Registration Forms” menu option. Registrants may also contact the library by email: sfrench@whitewater-wi.gov or phone: 262-458-2782.

As defined within the release, “Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the Dementia Friends initiative is underway in Wisconsin and across the United States.”

LEGO users group

The public is invited to view the “Wisconsin LEGO Users Group large builds,” according to information released by the library.

The event will he held Saturday, May 20.

According to the LEGO group’s website, “WisLUG” is based in southern Wisconsin. The group holds meetings and activities that “typically cater” to adult LEGO fans.

For younger fans, according to the site, the group “also holds several public display events throughout the region where visitors can see the creative works of our members.”

According to the group’s website, a “public exposition” will be held at the library between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

According to information released by the library, the event will be held in the community room and will feature “intricate, fun, creations.”

A LEGO building station also will be available, information from the library states.

‘Composting 101’

Led by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater professor Linda Holmes, “Composting 101” offers an opportunity to learn about the natural process of composting, according to information released by the library.

As stated in the release, “composting is a natural process that uses some of the things that we usually put in the garbage or even in the recycling bin. The resulting compost is a very nutrient-rich mulch that can be used to improve the soil.”

The presentation will be held Tuesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m.
