Frigid temperatures didn’t deter volunteers from holding the outdoor Second Harvest Catholic Charities Mobile Pantry in Fort Atkinson on Thursday afternoon.
The drive-through pantry takes place on the second Thursday of the month from 2 to 3:45 p.m., or as long as the food supply lasts, in the parking lot of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson.
The masked volunteers are affiliated with the Alfred Endres Council 3306 of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
As motorists near the distribution site, they release the trunk latch so the volunteers can place the groceries in their vehicle.
Each car receives an identical pre-packed box of groceries that include 50 pounds of food: dry items, a bag of cooler food and a gallon of milk.
In addition, only one share of food is given per car; there is no pickup for others. Carpoolers must get in line each time to pick up groceries for each family.
There is no registration or income requirement to receive food, and no ID is required.
The boxes of food for 280 families are given as long as the food lasts.
