The School District of Fort Atkinson recently honored eight members of the district’s Safety Patrol Program.
The students, two from each of the district’s four elementary schools, were honored in October as Safety Patrol Students of the Month and were treated to lunch at Culver’s.
Students honored included Eve Oakley and Maggie Fredrick of Purdy Elementary School, Adelyn Fisher and Maggie Mather of Rockwell Elementary School, Anderson Dunford and Drake Van Etten of Barrie Elementary School, and Peyton Henry and Tyson Geiger of Luther Elementary School.
The program offers training to fifth-graders at each of the district’s four elementary schools who would like to participate as safety patrollers at their respective schools.
Students then serve for a month, helping fellow students safely cross streets near their schools before and after school.
Students who show exemplary commitment to the service they provide are selected by their teachers and treated to a lunch where they have the opportunity to meet students from other elementary schools who also participated in the program.
Teachers select two students from each elementary school for the recognition.
One of the benefits of the lunch, Purdy Elementary School Principal Leigh Ann Scheuerell noted in an earlier interview, is that students in fifth grade have an opportunity to meet students from other elementary schools with whom they will attend middle school next school year.
