Dr. Georgia Jane (Knox) Mode, 82, of Fort Atkinson, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on September 20, 2024.
Georgia was born on April 19, 1942 to William David Knox and Jane Edith (Shaw) Knox in Fort Atkinson. Georgia’s first career was as a French teacher before returning to the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974 to become a Medical Doctor specializing in Family Practice. She became Fort Atkinson’s first practicing female medical doctor in 1985. Georgia loved her patients and they loved her – her greatest joy was delivering babies.
Georgia married James “Jim” Mode in 1964 and during their 60 years of marriage they had two children, Gregory and Gina, and two grandchildren, Geoffrey and Stephenie.
Georgia spent her retirement volunteering at a free medical clinic, baking, canning, cooking, gardening, knitting, reading, completing jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.
Georgia is survived by her husband Jim, son Greg (Tina Bothum), daughter Gina (John Galvin), her two grandchildren, brothers David (Dedi) Knox, Randy (Denise Derry) Knox, and Brian (Terrie) Knox, sister-in-law Diane (Ed) Corcoran, cousin George (Nancy) Buth, and longtime best friend Njari Crosby. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Orrin (Peggy) Mode, aunt GeorgeAnn (Marty) Buth, and cousin Martin Buth.
Georgia will be remembered for her compassion, kindness, and generosity – always putting others before herself. She will be dearly missed.
Services will be held on Saturday September 28 at 11 am with visitation at 9:30 am at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 302 Merchants Avenue, Fort Atkinson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Doctors Without Borders or St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeff McGuire, Home Instead (especially Areli, Emily, Larissa, Natalie, Taylor, and Veronica), and Commonheart Hospice for all the time and care they spent with Georgia.
Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson is assisting the family.
