Driver found dead in crash after evading Jefferson County deputy

A man is dead after fleeing from police and crashing his vehicle.

According to information released Friday by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy approached a parked vehicle to perform a check near the intersection of county roads Q and B in the town of Aztalan.

Contact was made Friday at 9:53 p.m.

Upon making contact with the driver and vehicle, the deputy, who, according to the release, “smelled the odor of marijuana,” instructed the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, to step out.

“The driver fled from the scene of the stop and attempted to elude the deputy,” the release reported.

The deputy pursued the vehicle southbound on County Road G, but the suspect pulled away from the deputy, who lost sight of the vehicle near the intersection of State Highway 12 and County Road G, the release stated.

“The deputy noticed ‘smoke’ near the curve on County Road G, just north of State Highway 12. Upon checking this area, the deputy discovered that the suspect vehicle had crashed and appeared to have rolled several times,” the release noted, adding that the crash occurred at approximately 10:12 p.m.

When deputies checked the condition of the driver, they were unable to find a pulse and advised that the subject appeared to be trapped.

Fort Atkinson Fire and EMS responded to the scene and found the male subject was deceased.

The driver’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family, according to the release.

The incident is under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Wisconsin State Patrol, Fort Atkinson Fire and EMS, and the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office, the release stated.
