Earth Day fair planned 

Earth Day is  Monday, April 22.

Two community-oriented organizations: the Jefferson County-based group “Sustain Jefferson,” and Fort Atkinson-based group “Heart of the City,” have joined together to sponsor a second annual Earth Day Fair.

The event will be held Saturday, April 20, at the Jefferson Area Business Center, 222 S. Wisconsin Dr., Jefferson, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

According to a recent news release, “the purpose of the Earth Day Fair is to bring the community together to celebrate our wonderful earth, learn about its creatures and wonders, and to become aware of the many varied efforts by local organizations to preserve and protect our incredible planet.”

Fair-goers will find 12 organization which will provide varying activities, including those that are oriented towards children, and others oriented to a broader audience such as flower pressing and creating seed tapes, among others.

Additionally, Hoo’s Woods, a Milton-based nonprofit raptor education and rehabilitation center, will be on hand with three of its educational birds. The birds likely will represent such species as owls, hawks or falcons.

The center was founded in 1998. Its mission is to inform and educate the public about wildlife and its habitat, the release stated.

Further, attendees will find information regarding monarch butterflies, eco-products for the home, native plants, songbirds, sustainable grazing, and electrical projects, among others, along with opportunities to learn about the importance of the soil and water, and effects from human impacts.

Handmade birdhouses will be available for a donation on a first come, first served basis, the release stated.

The release further noted that a representative from the Land and Water Conversation Department will be on hand to do water testing.

Those interested in having water tested are encouraged to bring samples that have been collected in a clean glass or plastic bottle. Samples are best taken from main drinking water sources without touching the bottle or jar to the facet head. Samples at room temperature will be tested. The process is anticipated to take between 5 and 10 minutes. 

Fair-goers will additionally find a clothing swap table where individuals can drop off or obtain gently used items.

The Jefferson Art walk also will take place April 20, Two artists will be situated at the Earth Day Event. They are Janet Nelson and Amanda Langer, both of whom will have work on display.

Both of the event’s sponsoring groups encourage members of the Jefferson County community to participate and enjoy the fair.
