Equine hero’s story to be told at Dwight Foster Public Library

In honor of Veterans Day, the story of “Staff Sgt. Reckless,” an equine hero of the Korean War, will be shared at the Dwight Foster Public Library, Thursday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m.

The program is sponsored by the library and the U.S. Veterans Library Project, according to information released by the library.

Staff Sergeant Reckless was a decorated war horse who held official rank in the United States military, according to the release.

She served in numerous combat actions during the Korean War, carrying supplies and ammunition, and was also used to evacuate wounded. She learned each supply route after only a couple of trips, often traveled to deliver supplies to the troops on her own, without benefit of a handler. The highlight of her nine-month military career came in late March of 1953 during the Battle for Outpost Vegas, the release stated.

The Dwight Foster Library is located at 209 Merchants Avenue in Fort Atkinson.

A virtual option is also planned. To register for the virtual presentation and obtain a link, visit the library’s website: fortlibrary.org.
