First Congregational United Church of Christ choir member of 65 years shares love of music

The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Atkinson earlier this month celebrated the 65-year musical ministry of JoAnn Rose.

According to information shared for publication by the church’s Church Relations Committee, Rose joined the senior choir in 1959, singing for several directors over 15 years before Marvin Olsen became senior choir director.

In September 2023, the release noted, Olsen himself marked his half-century leading the adult, youth and handbell choirs.

During a worship service held Sunday, Sept. 8, the Rev. Dr. Sara Rabe offered congratulatory remarks.

“For the love of music, this 20-year-old JoAnn sought a place where she could continue to pursue this love,” Rabe was quoted as saying in the release, adding: “At the time, the choir was a bit bigger and Robert Alward was the pastor. JoAnn remembers the Harriet Vance, Madge Becker and Eva Steinke trio, which was a triple dynamo.”

Within the release, Rabe noted that when Rose walked into choir rehearsal for the first time, Vance was wearing a mink wrap.

“Not sure if this was the place she belonged, but after 65 years, I would say she found a spiritual home in the choir,” the minister lovingly quipped.

She observed, the release reported, that there are few things you love that you can continue to do for 65 years.

“Sometimes the body gives out, but the passion of the heart lasts forever. This is more than a love of music; it is a love of God that JoAnn is singing for,” Rabe said.

“JoAnn has been singing in praise to God, even through her youth. (That’s) longer than she has been married, longer than she has been a mother. The choir here at First Congregational Church has been part of her life,” she continued.

Attending weekly rehearsals and Sunday morning services is a commitment, she said, but said Rose says her favorite part of the choir is the people: “The camaraderie like a family, a solid community.

As reported in the release, Rabe concluded: “JoAnn, we appreciate your dedication to adding glory and praise to God for 65 years. The worship we have enjoyed through the music of the choir is an added blessing to the joy of our gathering in communion and fellowship. Thanks be to God for you, JoAnn.”

Olsen presented Rose with floral arrangements and a gift certificate to The Fireside Dinner Theatre, courtesy of the choir, according to the release.

Rose’s husband, Bob, and their five children and their families were in attendance at the service, which was followed by a reception in Rose’s honor.
