Fort Atkinson First Congregational United Church of Christ has announced that it will be offering an observance in honor of National Grandparents Day.
The church, 31 W. Milwaukee Ave., will be providing a special service Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. Children of all ages are invited to attend the special worship, according to information released by the church.
According to the release, Marian McQuade, a resident of West Virginia — who served on the West Virginia Commission on Aging and Nursing Home Licensing Board, according to information found online — founded Grandparents Day. Online information notes that the observance was first held in West Virginia in 1973, and later, after a bill was signed by former President Jimmy Carter, as a national observance in 1978. The observance is held nationally on the Sunday after Labor Day.
McQuade founded the observance to ”raise awareness about senior citizens,” according to information released by the church.
“Please join us in celebrating the elders and grandparents in our lives. Bring your grandkids or a kid in your life. Bring your grandparents. Bring a person you consider an elder in your life, a neighbor or friend,” the release stated.
The Fort Atkinson First Congregational UCC recently celebrated 180 years of providing spiritual leadership and worship opportunities to the community, the release noted.
