Fort Atkinson World War II memorial unveiling set for this Sunday

The Fort Atkinson World War II Memorial Committee has announced that the unveiling and dedication of a newly constructed World War II monument will be held this Sunday in Fort Atkinson’s McCoy Park.

According to the release, the ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.

The park is located at 1202 Madison Ave.

The ceremony will further include the unveiling of two granite benches, one of which will feature a quote from the late author and Whitewater resident in his youth Stephen Ambrose. The author was most noted for his books about World War II.  A second bench, the release noted, “will honor two local World War II Medal of Honor recipients.” They are Sgt. Gerald Endl and Sgt. Kenneth Gruennert.

The monument’s centerpiece, which the release stated, was “envisioned” by Fort Atkinson resident Mabel Schumacher, and created by local metal sculptor Brady Lueck, features a stainless-steel globe set on a stone base.

According to information earlier released by Schumacher, the benches will be placed on the edge of a concrete pad on both sides of a path leading to the monument’s centerpiece.

The granite base and benches are inscribed and placed by The Blocks Watertown Memorial Company and artist Daniel Atkinson, the release read.

According to the release, the ceremony will feature “World War II military vehicles, re-enactors, a flyover, special guests, and speaker Mark Finnegan, president of VetsRoll.”

With limited parking at McCoy Park, accommodations for event-goers will include a shuttle, which will transport them from a parking lot made available at MATC, 827 Banker Rd., to the park. The shuttle will begin operating at noon.

The park also presents limited seating opportunities. Event-goers are asked to bring lawn chairs.

After the event, the release continued, a gathering is scheduled to take place at the American Legion Post 166, 201 S. Water St. E., where snacks and soft drinks, sponsored by American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1879 Auxiliaries, will be offered.
