The Fort Atkinson City Council has proclaimed April 30 as Arbor Day in the city of Fort Atkinson.
The proclamation is required to meet the conditions of being named as a Tree City USA, Supervisor of Public Works Tom Williamson wrote in a memo to council.
Fort Atkinson has been recognized as a Tree City for 28 years, he wrote.
Within his memo, Williamson noted that the Arbor Day Foundation has designated Friday, April 30, as National Arbor Day. The foundation encourages nationwide celebrations through volunteerism and community events.
This year, as a COVID-19 pandemic precaution, the foundation is encouraging celebrations that include hiking in forests, and learning about and planting trees.
This year will be the 29th year that the city has maintained a tree-planting program, Williamson said.
“We will begin planting trees on the 29th, and will have a few students that will be helping us out,” Williamson added.
