Fort Community Foundation’s Hartwick to retire; replacement search underway 

The Fort Atkinson Community Foundation has announced that its longtime executive director, Sue Hartwick, will be retiring at the end of this year.

Additionally, the foundation noted in a recent press release, that it is conducting a search to find her replacement.

According to the release, Hartwick will end her tenure with the organization on Dec. 31.

In a recent email, Hartwick noted that the organization would be accepting applications as part of its search for her replacement through Sept. 15.

As stated in the release, Hartwick “took over the foundation’s reins from Helen Rose in 2012.”

At the time, the release continued, the foundation held 62 funds with assets totaling approximately $20 million.

The release read: “Building on the position established by Rose, under Hartwick’s 12-year leadership, the foundation has grown to include 87 funds with assets doubling in size.”

Today, the foundation holds assets of approximately $40 million, “all while investing $12 million into the Fort Atkinson community through grants and scholarships,” the release continued. 

“Sue has been a tremendous asset to the foundation. Her strong connections in the community have helped the foundation navigate needs and actively seek out opportunities. Sue has been a strong team player and has been a wonderful advocate for the foundation. She has been a good steward of our resources while continuing to grow our assets. We wish Sue our sincere congratulations on her retirement. It has truly been a pleasure working with her,” foundation Chairman Sally Koehler was quoted as saying in the release.

For over 50 years,” the release continued, “the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation has worked with generous donors to pool charitable resources to make a difference in the Fort Atkinson community. Since 1973, the foundation has distributed over $24.3 million in grants and scholarships, enhancing the community’s quality of life, fostering success for local nonprofit organizations, and investing in the community’s young people. Run by a volunteer five-member board of directors, the foundation continues to benefit from the forward-thinking generosity of the community it serves.” 

Within the release, Hartwick was quoted as saying: “I have been so lucky to have a job that truly makes a difference in a community I love. I love coming to work every day to hear about new projects being proposed, to meet community members who have a passion for something, and to learn new ideas about making Fort Atkinson better. It’s been a dream job.”
