The School District of Fort Atkinson recently honored eight members of the district’s Safety Patrol Program.
Eight students, two from each of the district’s four elementary schools, were honored Friday, Sept. 24, and were invited to attend a lunch at Barrie Park. The meal for the students was supplied courtesy of McDonalds.
Students honored included Amelia Ellis and Katie Pedraza Carmona, Rockwell; Larissa Reu and Luke Weilgat, Luther; Alexandria Luebke, and Tenlee Huber, Barrie, and Ava Krahn and Lily Zuniga Manzano, Purdy.
The program offers training to fifth-graders at each of the district’s four elementary schools who would like to participate as safety patrollers at their respective schools.
Students then serve for a month, helping fellow students safely cross streets near their schools before and after school.
Students who show exemplary commitment to the service they provide are selected by their teachers and treated to a lunch, suppled by McDonalds, where they have the opportunity to meet students from other elementary schools who also participated in the program.
Teachers select two students from each elementary school for the recognition.
One of the benefits of the lunch, Purdy Elementary School Principal Leigh Ann Scheuerell noted in an earlier interview, is that students in fifth grade have an opportunity to meet students from other elementary schools with whom they will attend middle school next school year.
