The Fort Atkinson Fire Department responded Thursday, July 8, to a fire in the 6900 block of Grogan Road.
It was the second fire in the area, according to Fire Department Division Chief Mike Lawrence, who said that the department responded to a similar fire on Grogan Road on June 26.
According to Lawrence, Thursday’s fire was reported just after 6 p.m. when firefighters were alerted to a piece of farm equipment that was burning.
Firefighters arrived on the scene around 6:10 p.m., Lawrence said, at which time they found an “80-foot x 80-foot pole-shed-type building” under “heavy fire.”
While an official determination about the cause of the fire was not available, Lawrence said it was likely that the equipment that was reported to have been burning may have been stored in close proximity to the shed that caught fire.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 8:40 p.m., he said, adding that the structure and its contents were a total loss.
No farm animals were inside the building, Lawrence said, adding that there was no loss of life associated with the fire.
Fire departments from Jefferson, Rock and Walworth counties responded to the fire, he said.
An ambulance was on scene as a precaution and to assist firefighters.
Lawrence confirmed that an earlier fire occurred on June 26 at a different address on Grogan Road.
That fire also involved a pole-shed-type building, Lawrence said. While there were horses on the property, he said, he believed the structure that burned was used to store machinery and hay.
No loss of life was reported, he said.
The building and its contents were a total loss.
The cause of the fire was not available.
Lawrence said the department responded to a call for help which came in at 11:06 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene for several hours, he said, because a backhoe was required to make sure no hot spots were left in the hay that was stored on the property.
Fire Departments from Jefferson, Rock and Walworth counties responded to the fire.
While the two fires were similar and on the same road, he said they were unrelated.
