A Fort Atkinson man who was convicted of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime after the death of a relative was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment Monday, Aug. 30.
Kenneth M. Strese was accused in 2019 as a party to the crime of recklessly causing the 2016 death of his nephew, Cameron J. Strese, then 23 according to his obituary, and also a resident of Fort Atkinson, who died of a drug overdose.
Kenneth Strese, who turned 47 last month, was found guilty after a jury trial held in Jefferson County on July 15.
During a sentencing hearing held Aug. 30, Strese, who appeared in the Jefferson County Circuit Court in custody and with his attorney Lane Fitzgerald, received a sentence of eight years of imprisonment, consisting of five years of initial confinement and three years of extended supervision, according to information provided on the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access website.
Further, the court found that Strese was not eligible for either of the state’s two early release programs which can reduce the period of initial confinement. They are the Challenge Incarceration Program, otherwise known as “boot camp,” and the Substance Abuse Program, otherwise known as “earned release.”
The court granted Strese a 74-day credit for time already served.
As conditions of extended supervision, the court ordered Strese to maintain absolute sobriety, engage in no possession or consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs, and to report any prescribed medication, with further specification that the defendant “take any and all prescription medication as prescribed.”
Additionally, the court ordered Strese to pay costs, fees, assessments and surcharges, including the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis surcharge.
A restitution hearing is scheduled for Sept. 13.
