Fort Atkinson fishermen have a new way to recycle their fishing line, according to information recently released by the City of Fort Atkinson.
Trent Davis, a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 134 and a junior at Fort Atkinson High School, recently built fishing line recycling receptacles along the riverwalk for his Eagle Scout service project.
“The idea for this project actually came from the City Engineer Andy Selle, who brought up the idea in an email to my dad, who is my troop’s scoutmaster. He wanted us to do it as a troop, but I asked if I could take it on as an Eagle Scout project, as I needed a project for the next step in my scouting career,” Davis said in the release.
“Trent was great to work with,” Selle said in the release, describing Davis as “another excellent example of the outstanding youth in our community.”
The project interested Davis because it was a way to keep the community he calls home clean, the release stated.
“When the idea of recycling containers came up, I thought it was great,” Davis continued, adding, “being that it would be along the riverwalk — one of my favorite places in the city — I thought it would be good to help maintain it being clean with my project.”
Davis said he hopes the project will encourage people to recycle their fishing line.
Davis was assisted in building his project by his father, Jeff Davis, Selle, Nathan Daniels, who was his project coach, and his scouting troop, the release noted.
Tom Williamson and Nick Rueth, Davis said, also helped him along the way.
Along with scouting, Davis enjoys sports at school, participating in cross country, Esports and track and field. After high school, Davis said, he plans to attend college to study computer science or computer engineering.
Davis is working on his Eagle application and will go before the Eagle Scout Board of Review, defined on a scouting website as the final step to achieving the highest rank in scouting.
